"'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' Nice try, buddy, but Scripture says that He will never forsake or abandon us. I suspect that if we approached the Psalms the same way we approached worship music, taking this line by line approach where if one line seems problematic we gut the whole thing, our Bibles would be a fair bit slimmer. As a result, many harmless or even theologically sound songs can become problematic because a line or two are emphasized or stick in our head when they're something that needs to be held in context with the rest of the song. Pastors and laypeople alike have a habit, I think, of not looking at the worship song beyond the line they're singing. I think we have less of a problem with lyrics and more of a problem with our hermeneutics of worship.
